Japan’s NPI announces price hikes for certain cartonboard coated paper from October 1

  • Japan's Nippon Paper Industries (NPI) has announced price hikes of at least 15% for some of its cartonboard and coated paper products, starting with October 1 shipments.

The proposed increases will cover its base paper for cups and food containers, high-end white cartonboard range, and cast-coated paper.

The company ascribed the move to soaring costs of logistics and raw materials, such as coal and heavy oil.

For similar reasons, NPI tabled in late July a minimum price increase of ¥15 per kg ($111/tonne) for its containerboard grades and at least 15% hikes for several specialty board grades, including chipboard, coreboard, gypsum board base paper and base paper for its patent water-resistant board. These are scheduled to take effect with shipments from September 1.

NPI is also set to raise prices for two categories of liquid-packaging cartons for milk and soft drinks by at least 12% and a minimum of 10%, for shipments from October 1.
