Pricing Rationale: NBSK CIF China

  • SINGAPORE, June 3, 2022 (Fastmarkets RISI) - Sellers reported that despite restricted availability due to ongoing supply-side disruptions, Chinese customers, particularly major end-users, held back on purchasing NBSK imports.

Despite the easing of lockdowns and the ramping-up of production in China, suppliers indicated that there was no sign clients intended to replenish depleted pulp stocks.

The Chinese industry is wary of the contraction in economy stemming from stringent anti-COVID-19 measures that lasted for a long time, which might tip the country into a recession.

Customers indicated prices for virgin fiber-based finished products such as tissue paper, fine paper and coated ivory board were in decline on the back of ebbing consumption.

Suppliers resisted pressure from sluggish demand and kept NBSK prices intact, with Canadian and Nordic NBSK at $990-1,030/tonne and $980-1,030/tonne respectively. The mid-point for the grade is thus $1,008/tonne

However, a dominant producer quietly cut BSK prices by $20/tonne to boost sales of its pulp products, chiefly to Chinese traders, who manage the risks of procurement by investing in futures.

BSK futures for the most popular September contract on the Shanghai bourse edged up RMB 40/tonne over the past week, settling at RMB 7,156/tonne on Thursday - equivalent to $932/tonne after removing 13% VAT and RMB 120/tonne logistics costs.
